LUCI SUL LAGO, LAGO D'ORTA

luci sul lago.jpg

This stunningly picturesque area on Lago d’Orta is divided into two parts: on the right is an idyllic swathe of parkland sloping gently down to the water’s edge, whilst on the left is a free-access private establishment comprising a pretty artificial beach with rows of sunbeds next door to a gorgeous lakeside restaurant.

With wooden terraced decking over the water, peaceful Luci sul Lago is by far our favourite spot for a romantic late afternoon aperitif or dinner. It is also the best spot for catching a lakeside sunset. You won’t find a better place to sip an aperitif whilst the sun sinks behind the mountains in the west.

If you’ve got the energy, and providing you arrive early enough to grab a parking place during the busy summer months, this area makes a great base for exploring the enchanted town of Orta.

Our recommendation is to walk back to the area’s ultra-swanky standout landmark: Villa Crespi hotel and restaurant with its astonishing amalgam of gothic and oriental styles. Look out for the towering green minaret. From there head downhill to the lake and follow the wonderful lakeside path all the way round Orta promontory back to your starting point.

Of course, you’ll want to spend some time exploring the magnificent lakeside town, which with its cobbled alleyways and medieval buildings must be the quintessential Italian Lakes destination. If time allows, you can catch a boat to the island whose monastery lends it a palpably spiritual atmosphere.

When you return, you can choose between finding a private patch on the grassy slope before sipping a drink in dappled sunlight under the trees or heading for the fabulous restaurant for an aperitif or for dinner. The food uses local sourced ingredients and is good value for money.

If you fancy a quick dip after a busy day rest assured that the water is crystal clear.
